Cannabis goes through distinct growth phases, each with different requirements:
Seeds sprout and the tap root emerges. Most growers use the paper towel method (seeds between moist paper towels in a warm, dark place) or plant directly into moist soil. Keep temperatures around 70–80°F (21–27°C).
The first set of true leaves appear. Seedlings need gentle light (18–24 hours), moderate humidity (65–70%), and light watering. Avoid overwatering — it's the most common beginner mistake.
Rapid growth of stems and leaves. Plants need 18+ hours of light per day, regular feeding with nitrogen-rich nutrients, and training techniques (topping, LST) to shape the canopy. This is when the plant builds its structure.
Triggered by switching to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness (autoflowers do this automatically). Buds form and develop. Switch to phosphorus/potassium-rich nutrients. Monitor trichomes to determine harvest timing.
Cut plants when trichomes are mostly cloudy (use a jeweler's loupe). Dry slowly over 7–14 days in a cool, dark space at ~60°F with 60% humidity. Then cure in sealed glass jars for 2–4+ weeks, burping daily. Curing develops flavor and smoothness.
