Why There's No Standard CBD Dose

Unlike pharmaceuticals, CBD doesn't have an FDA-established dose. This isn't because it's unsafe — it's because CBD hasn't gone through the formal drug approval process for most applications (Epidiolex, approved for certain seizure disorders at specific doses, is the exception).

Individual response to CBD varies based on body weight, metabolism, the specific condition you're addressing, your endocannabinoid system's baseline tone, the product's spectrum type (full-spectrum vs isolate), and whether you're taking it with food or on an empty stomach. Two people taking the same product at the same dose may have meaningfully different experiences.

That said, we can give you a structured framework. Think of CBD dosing less like "take two pills" and more like adjusting a dimmer switch — you're looking for the setting that works for your specific situation.

Starting Dose by Weight

The most widely used starting framework is weight-based, typically expressed as milligrams of CBD per pound of body weight. Here's where most practitioners and experienced users suggest beginning.

Low Dose (General Wellness, Mild Stress)

0.1mg per pound of body weight, once or twice daily

Example: 150 lb person → 15mg per dose

10–20mg per dose

Moderate Dose (Sleep Support, Moderate Stress, Mild Discomfort)

0.2mg per pound of body weight, once or twice daily

Example: 150 lb person → 30mg per dose

20–40mg per dose

Higher Dose (Significant Discomfort, Chronic Issues)

0.3–0.5mg per pound of body weight, once or twice daily

Example: 150 lb person → 45–75mg per dose

40–75mg per dose
Always start at the low end. You can increase your dose, but you can't un-take what you've already consumed. Begin with the low dose range regardless of your goal, use it consistently for 5–7 days, and then adjust upward if needed.

Adjusting by Goal

For anxiety and stress: Many users find that lower doses (10–25mg) are more effective for anxiety than higher doses. There's some evidence of a biphasic effect — CBD may promote alertness at very low doses and calm at moderate doses. If higher doses make you feel more drowsy than calm, scale back.

For sleep: Sleep typically requires a higher dose than daytime anxiety management. Most sleep-focused products contain 25–50mg per serving. Take 45–60 minutes before bed. Combining with CBN or melatonin can lower the effective CBD dose needed.

For pain and discomfort: Pain tends to respond to higher doses, and many users find that full-spectrum products are more effective per milligram than isolate for this purpose. Start at the moderate range and increase incrementally. Topicals for localized pain can be used alongside oral CBD.

For general wellness: If you don't have a specific issue and want to incorporate CBD into your daily routine, start at the low end (10–15mg). Many wellness users find that a consistent low daily dose provides subtle but cumulative benefits over 2–4 weeks.

Format Matters: Bioavailability

Not all CBD that enters your mouth reaches your bloodstream. The percentage that does is called bioavailability, and it varies dramatically by product type.

FormatBioavailabilityOnsetDuration

Sublingual Oil12–35%15–30 min4–6 hours
Gummies / Edibles6–20%45–90 min6–8 hours

Capsules6–15%60–90 min6–8 hours

What this means in practice: 25mg of CBD in a gummy delivers less active CBD to your system than 25mg from a sublingual oil. If you switch formats, you may need to adjust your dose. Moving from gummies to sublingual oil, you might need less. Moving from oil to gummies, you might need more.

The Titration Method

This is the most reliable approach to finding your effective dose. It takes 2–3 weeks but produces a clear, personalized answer.

Days 1–5: Start Low

Begin at the low dose for your weight (roughly 0.1mg/lb). Take at the same time each day. Note how you feel 1–2 hours after dosing. Record: dose, time, and any noticeable effects (or lack thereof).

Days 6–10: First Increase

If you haven't noticed the desired effect, increase by 5mg per dose. Continue taking at the same time daily. Keep recording.

Days 11–15: Dial In

Continue increasing by 5mg every 5 days until you find the dose where you notice a clear effect. Once you hit that point, stay there for a full week to confirm it's consistent.

Day 16+: Maintenance

You've found your effective dose. Use this as your daily maintenance amount. Revisit if your weight changes significantly, you switch products, or you notice the effects fading.

Common Dosing Mistakes

Giving up too early

CBD often needs 1–2 weeks of consistent daily use before its full effects become apparent. Taking it once and deciding it doesn't work is like going to the gym once and deciding exercise doesn't help.

Starting too high

More is not always better with CBD. Some research suggests a bell-curve response where moderate doses are more effective than very high doses. Starting high also makes it harder to identify your minimum effective dose, which saves money long-term.

Inconsistent timing

CBD works best when taken at consistent times. Your endocannabinoid system responds to regularity. Pick a time (morning for anxiety, evening for sleep) and stick with it.

Ignoring food

CBD is fat-soluble. Taking it with a meal that contains fat (even a handful of nuts or a spoonful of peanut butter) can significantly improve absorption. Taking it on an empty stomach reduces what your body actually absorbs.

Comparing doses across products

25mg of full-spectrum CBD is not equivalent to 25mg of CBD isolate. The entourage effect means full-spectrum products often deliver more noticeable effects at lower doses. If you switch spectrum types, readjust your dose accordingly.
