Where to Start (If You're Overwhelmed)

The CBD market is enormous and confusing. Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate. Gummies, oils, topicals, capsules. 10mg, 25mg, 50mg. It's a lot.

Here's the short version: for your first CBD product, get a broad-spectrum CBD gummy in the 25mg range from a brand that publishes third-party lab results. Broad-spectrum gives you most of the plant's benefits without THC (so no drug test worries), gummies are the easiest format to use, and 25mg is a reasonable starting dose for most adults.

That's it. You can optimize later once you know how CBD affects you personally. For now, simplicity beats optimization.

Understanding the Basics

Before spending any money, here are the four things that actually matter.

CBD is not marijuana. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 100 compounds found in the cannabis plant. It's non-intoxicating — it will not get you high, no matter how much you take. THC is the compound responsible for the high associated with marijuana. Hemp-derived CBD products contain 0.3% THC or less by federal law.

Spectrum type determines what else is in the product. Full-spectrum has everything (including trace THC). Broad-spectrum has everything except THC. Isolate is pure CBD only. For beginners, broad-spectrum is the sweet spot — you get supporting cannabinoids and terpenes without THC concerns. Read our full comparison for details.

Lab testing is the quality floor. Any brand worth buying from publishes third-party Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for every product. These verify the CBD content matches the label and screen for contaminants. If you can't find lab results on a brand's website, move on. Our COA reading guide shows you what to look for.

CBD isn't a miracle drug. It may support stress management, sleep, and physical comfort, but it's not a cure for anything. Federal regulations prohibit CBD brands from making medical claims, and we hold ourselves to the same standard. Approach CBD as a supplement, not a solution.

Your First Week with CBD

Day 1: Take one gummy (or one dropper of oil) at the same time you'd normally want the effects. For stress, try morning. For sleep, try 60 minutes before bed. Don't expect dramatic results on day one.

Days 2–5: Continue the same dose at the same time. Pay attention to subtle shifts — slightly calmer during the day, falling asleep a few minutes faster, less tension in your shoulders. CBD is subtle, not dramatic.

Days 6–7: If you feel nothing, increase by half a gummy (or half a dropper). Continue at the new dose for another 5 days. Repeat the process until you find a dose that produces noticeable effects.

Common Beginner Questions

Will I feel high?

No. CBD is non-intoxicating. Even full-spectrum products with trace THC (under 0.3%) don't produce a high. You may feel calmer or more relaxed, but it's a subtle shift — not an altered state.

How do I know if it's working?

CBD's effects are often defined by the absence of something rather than the presence of something. You might notice you're not as tense, not thinking about work at 11pm, not tossing and turning as long. It's easy to miss if you're expecting a dramatic sensation.

Is it addictive?

No. The World Health Organization's 2018 critical review concluded that CBD exhibits no effects indicative of abuse or dependence potential. You can stop taking it at any time without withdrawal symptoms.

Can I take it with my medications?

CBD can interact with certain medications by affecting liver enzymes (CYP450). This is particularly relevant for blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, and some antidepressants. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting CBD if you take prescription medication.

What to Avoid as a Beginner

Gas station CBD. Products sold at gas stations, convenience stores, and dollar stores are almost never tested and frequently contain less CBD than labeled — or no CBD at all. Some have been found to contain synthetic cannabinoids.

Products with health claims. Any CBD product that says it "cures," "treats," or "heals" a specific condition is violating FDA regulations and signaling a lack of credibility. Legitimate brands use cautious language like "may support" or "potential benefits."

Mega-dose products. 100mg, 200mg, or higher per serving products are for experienced users. Starting there wastes money and makes it harder to find your minimum effective dose. Begin at 10–25mg.

Products without lab results. Non-negotiable. If you can't verify what's in the bottle, don't put it in your body. Check for a current Certificate of Analysis from an independent lab.
